Iced Chai Latte

Sweet, spicy, and creamy, an Iced Chai Latte is great for tea lovers! Made with just a handful of ingredients, including tea bags, any kind of milk, and topped with cold foam, this is a delicious coffeehouse-style drink without the coffeehouse price tag!

Most people are familiar with chai, which is a type of spiced black tea. The warm and aromatic spices include cardamom, clove, cinnamon, ginger, and even black pepper. I really love chai as a hot drink in the winter because it brings such cozy vibes with the spices.

Iced chai made into a latte-style drink is offered at my local coffee shop. The base is a chai concentrate that is very sweet. Too sweet for my taste! The nice thing about making iced drinks at home is the ability to customize them in terms of strength and sweetness.

In this version, I've used good-quality chai tea bags. You may have your favorite brand or blend of loose chai. Use what you like!

I have an entire series on how to make coffeehouse-style drinks at home in my newsletter.

Lessons Learned

  • Brew the tea double-strength! Because the iced drink will have ice and milk added to it, the tea can quickly dilute and lose flavor. Make a strong brew!
  • I have instructions on how to cool off the tea quickly in the recipe below. Another option is to make a large batch of tea and store it in the fridge that week. It means one less step in making your iced chai latte when the mood strikes!
  • While I've not added any sweetener to the tea, you may want to add some. I recommend using a liquid sweetener to avoid any gritty, undissolved sweetener sitting at the bottom of your glass. My Simple Syrup (regular or sugar-free) is easy to make and keeps in the fridge.

Instructions

  1. Place the tea bags and water in a mug. Cover and let steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove and discard tea bags. Let cool to room temp. This can be made ahead and refrigerated.
  2. Or to cool off the tea quickly, add 3 to 4 ice cubes to a shaker, add the hot tea, and shake for 20 seconds. Immediately strain the tea into a glass. Voila! The tea is cooled with minimal dilution.
  3. Fill a glass with ice cubes. Pour in the cooled tea and milk.
  4. Top with vanilla cold foam and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon.
