Salty Dog

The Salty Dog is a fresh, citrusy cocktail that only needs two liquid ingredients: fresh grapefruit juice and a good-quality vodka. It's tart, refreshing, and so easy to make!
This simple cocktail is one of my favorites, especially during citrus season. I have a pink grapefruit tree in my Southern California backyard, and get to enjoy the juicy orbs all winter long. Now, I know that not everyone has access to a grapefruit tree, but grapefruit is readily available in grocery stores and farmers' markets, so I say take advantage of them while they are around.

I like to serve this cocktail with a seafood meal like my Baja Seafood Bake! The tartness of the drinkie pairs well with the tender shrimp and fish rubbed with Mexican seasoning. Delicious!
If you like grapefruit-based cocktails, then you may also want to try a Paloma, a drink made with grapefruit and lime juices, tequila, and sparkling water.
Lessons Learned
- For the best-tasting drink, you'll want to choose quality ingredients. Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and upper- to mid-range vodka are key. If you can afford pricier options like Grey Goose, go for it. Personally, I like Costco’s Kirkland brand!
- If freshly squeezed juice is not an option for you, no worries. The Simply Grapefruit brand is a good alternative. Find it in the refrigerated juice section of the grocery store.
